How To: Import custom ArcInfo linesets, markersets and shadesets into ArcView

Summary

Only symbolsets from UNIX ArcInfo may be used with ArcView. PC ARC/INFO symbolsets may not be used with ArcView.

Procedure

1. From the Window pulldown menu select Show Symbol Window.
2. Click the Palette Manager icon (last icon on the right).

  • Linesets:
    a. Set the Type to Pen in the Palette Manager.
    b. Click the Load button.
    c. In the Browse box change the file type to .lin and navigate to the .lin file.
    d. Click OK.
  • Shadesets:
    a. Set the Type to Fill in the Palette Manager.
    b. Click the Load button.
    c. In the Browse box change the file type to .shd and navigate to the .shd file.
    d. Click OK.
  • Markersets:
    All standard ArcInfo marker sets are included in ArcView. Custom marker sets can not be imported directly. To import custom markers, follow these steps:

    a. Convert the existing marker to one of these supported bitmap formats:

       - CompuServ GIF (*.gif)
    - MacPaint (*.mcp)
    - Sun Raster (*.rs)
    - TIFF Bitmap (*.tif)
    - Windows Bitmap (*.bmp)
    - X bitmap (*.xbm)


    b. Select the Import option under Palette Manager with the type set to Marker and import the bitmap.
    Note:
    You can convert to bitmap formats through ArcPress, graphics packages, or shareware utilities.
