Problem: Browse button in the New StreetMap USA Geocoding Service dialog box is disabled

Description

When you create a new ArcSDE StreetMap USA geocoding service, the Browse button you would use to look for reference data is disabled.

Cause

The path that is specified here is relative to the computer on which ArcSDE is installed, not to your desktop computer. Because this path must be relative to the computer on which ArcSDE is installed, and because ArcSDE may be installed on a UNIX operating system, you cannot browse for the StreetMap data.

Solution or Workaround

The default path that appears in this dialog box is:

${ESRI_US_STREETS_DIR}/usa.edg

Your ArcSDE administrator needs to create an environment variable called ESRI_US_STREETS_DIR that contains the path to the StreetMap data relative to the computer on which ArcSDE is running. If you know the path to the StreetMap data relative to the ArcSDE server, you can type it here.

Windows ArcSDE server:

d:\data\streets\usa.edg)

UNIX ArcSDE server:

/streetmap/data/streets/usa.edg)

If you are connecting to ArcSDE using a direct connect client, the path to the reference data that you specify must be relative to your computer. Type in the path in Windows format, regardless of whether the ArcSDE server is on a Windows or a UNIX computer. To avoid specifying the path each time you create a StreetMap USA geocoding service using a direct connect client, you can create an ESRI_US_STREETS_DIR environment variable on the computer that contains the path to the StreetMap reference data.
