PROBLEM

Attributes of a shapefile created using the MIF2Shape converter are in the wrong fields

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

The attribute values of a shapefile created by importing a MIF file are in the wrong fields. Everything is shifted to the right.

Cause

The tabular data stored in the MID file contains a field with the same name as the default field ArcView attempts to create. For example, if you have a MIF file named mapdata.mif and you import that data to a shapefile named mapdata.shp, ArcView will create a default field called mapdata_id. The problem occurs when the MID already contains a filed named mapdata_id.

Solution or Workaround

  • Choose a different shapefile file name during the import process. For example, mapdata2.shp
  • Open the MIF file in a text editor and change the name of the problem field to something else. For example, change mapdata_id to MIF_id.
