Increase performance when viewing images

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

How can I increase performance when viewing images in ArcIMS?

Procedure

  • On Windows NT, choose Start > Settings > Control Panel and double-click System.

    Click the Environment tab.

In the system variable window, click PATH (or create it if it doesn’t already exist) and add: ;<drive>:\Program Files\Javasoft\Jre\1.3.0_02\bin

Click OK and close the Control Panel window.
  • On Windows 2000, choose Start > Settings > Control Panel and double-click System.

    Click the Advanced tab.

    Click Environment Variables.

In the System Variable window, click your system variable PATH, click Edit and add: ;<drive>:\Program Files\javasoft\jre\1.3.0_02\bin

Click OK and close the Control Panel window.
  • On UNIX, use the following settings:

    setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $AEJHOME/lib for ArcExplorer-Java Edition

setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $AIMSHOME/lib for ArcIMS Author

This allows your system to take advantage of the Java Advanced Imaging (JAI) libraries to increase performance.

NOTE: ArcIMS for IBM AIX and HP-UX does not support JAI. When loading a TIFF image in ArcIMS Author or ArcExplorer-Java Edition, you will receive a warning message: "Could not load mediaLib" in the Message Console. This is just a warning message indicating that the JAI library cannot be loaded.
