Unable to specify the correct table when creating a layer from XY data

Description

I am unable to specify the correct table when I use the Display XY Data dialog box to create a layer.

Cause

It is possible to have two tables with identical names in the table of contents in ArcMap as long as they are stored in different directories. You can only create a layer from the XY data in the first table listed. The first table will be used even if you right-click the second table to create the layer.

Solution or Workaround

1. Display the Add XY Data dialog box.
   
   
   Click Tools > Add XY Data.
   
   
2. Select the correct table from the tables dropdown list.
3. Specify the fields for the X and Y coordinates.
4. Click OK to add create the new layer.
