PROBLEM

Changes to table settings in Tools > Options > Tables have no effect

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

After making a change to table appearance or behavior in the Tools > Options dialog box, the settings are not applied to the tables in the map.

Cause

The settings made in this dialog box define the default behavior for the tables of new layers or standalone tables added to ArcMap. Once the data has been added to ArcMap, the current settings are applied. These settings also span ArcMap sessions and are applied to new map documents.

Solution or Workaround

There are two ways to change the appearance of a table in ArcMap.

  • Use the Appearance command to set the appearance of an individual table after it has been added to ArcMap.

    A. Open the table window.
    B. Click Options > Appearance.
    C. Apply the desired settings and click OK.
    D. Repeat this process for all tables you want to change.

  • Remove, then add the data to ArcMap. The settings made in the Options dialog box will be applied to the newly added data.
