Create custom reference grid row or column labels

Summary

ArcMap uses numbers and letters to label the row and column headings for reference grids. To specify different heading values, such as Roman numerals, edit them in the Properties dialog box for the reference grid.

Procedure

1. Click the Data Frame Properties > Grids and select the reference grid to modify.
2. Click the Properties button.
3. Select Reference System Properties > Index.
4. Click the desired value in the column or row headings list boxes. Click the value again to enable editing.
5. Type in a new heading value.
