Convert UTM Zone 17 NAD83 to Albers Equal Area Conic HPGN

Summary

This article describes how to use the ArcView Projection Utility to convert data projected in UTM Zone 17 NAD83 meters to Albers Equal Area Conic HPGN. The Albers Equal Area Conic HPGN projection is one of the six projections used by the state of Florida.

Procedure

INPUT:
Projection Name: UTM Zone 17_N
Units: Meters
Datum: NAD83

OUTPUT:
Projection Name: Albers Equal Area Conic
Units: Meters
Datum: HPGN
Projection Parameters:

Central Meridian: -84.0
Central Parallel: 24.0
Standard Parallel 1: 24.0
Standard Parallel 2: 31.5
False Northing: 0
False Easting: 400000

  1. Load the shapefile and initialize the Projection Utility.

    A. Start ArcView.
    B. Select File > Extensions.
    C. Check 'Projection Utility Wizard' and click OK.
    D. Create a new view and add the shapefile to be projected.
    E. Select File > ArcView Projection Utility.

    Note:
    If the Coordinate System field in the Step 1 dialog box shows 'Unknown', define the input projection parameters as shown below. If the content of that field is other than 'Unknown', skip the input projection parameters definition.

  2. Click Next on the Step 1 dialog box.

    Note:
    Make sure the 'Show Advanced Options' check box is checked.

  3. Define the input projection parameters.

    A. Change Coordinate System Type to Projected.
    B. Set Name to NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_17N
    C. Set Units to Meters

  4. Click Next in the Step 2 dialog box. Click 'Yes' if you are prompted to save the coordinate system.
  5. Define the output projection parameters.

    A. Change Coordinate System Type to Projected.
    B. Select Custom under Name.
    C. Select Meter under Units.
    D. Click the Parameter tab.
    E. Change the Base Projection to Albers.
    F. Set Central Meridian: to -84.0.
    G. Set Central Parallel: to 24.0.
    H. Set Standard Parallel 1: to 24.0.
    I. Set Standard Parallel 2: to 31.5.
    J. Change the Geographic Coordinate System to GCS_North_American_1983_HARN.
    K. Set False Northing: to 0.
    L. Set False Easting: 400000.
    M. Set Prime Meridian to Greenwich.

  6. Click Next on the Step 3 dialog box.
  7. Click Browse to specify a name and location for the new shapefile.
  8. Click Next on the Step 4 dialog box.
  9. Review the Summary of the projection parameters.
  10. Click Finish.
