If you have DBMS tables in Oracle that were registered to ArcSDE, and then add an SDO_GEOMETRY column in order to associate geometry to the attributes in the table, the next time you connect to ArcSDE and try to access the newly created layer you may get this error:
Abstract Data Types not supported
This is a known issue at ArcSDE 8.1. You may run into this in two situations.
1. When Automatic Registration of third party Oracle Spatial tables recognizes a DBMS table that was registered to ArcSDE has been altered to contain an SDO_GEOMETRY column.
2. Any time you delete a layer using sdelayer –o delete and bring it back into your schema with the same name it was previously registered.
You can rectify the problem by refreshing your connection in ArcGIS.
