Error: Oracle View deleted in ArcCatalog cannot be re-created with SDETABLE command

Error Message

SDETABLE returns an error message when an Oracle view has been deleted through ArcCatalog.

The following error message is returned when trying to re-create the Oracle view using the SDETABLE command:

Error: DBMS view exists (-238).
Error: Unable to create MV view states_vu for table states.

The following error message is returned when trying to delete the Oracle view using the SDETABLE command:

Error: DBMS table not found (-37)
Error: Unable to delete MV view for table states.

Cause

This situation occurs if you create a view in ArcSDE using the SDETABLE command and then delete the view with ArcCatalog.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Re-create the view from the SQLPlus prompt:
    Code:
    CREATE or REPLACE VIEW <insert name of the original view>
    AS SELECT * FROM <table name>;


  2. Delete the view using the SDETABLE command.

    SDETABLE can now be used to re-create the view.
