How To: Load coverages into ArcSDE that contain redefined items

Summary

Coverages containing redefined items need to be converted into normal coverage items before loading into ArcSDE. This document will briefly describe a method for converting redefined coverage items into normal coverage items.

This conversion can be accomplished with the PULLITEMS command in ArcInfo Workstation, using the following syntax:

PULLITEMS <in_info_file> <out_info_file> {item...item}

Procedure

  1. Make a backup copy of your coverage in case mistakes are made during the PULLITEMS process. This will allow you to go back to your original coverage if you need to do PULLITEMS again.
  2. Using the above syntax, execute the PULLITEMS command from the Arc prompt.
  3. Enter all the items from your coverage into the dialog, including the redefined items, in the order in which they currently exist. Dialog Example:

    Arc: pullitems parcel.pat parcel.pat

Enter item names (type END or a blank line when done):
    ======================================================
    Enter the 1st item: area
    Enter the 2nd item: perimeter
    Enter the 3rd item: parcel#
    Enter the 4th item: parcel-id
    Enter the 5th item: oldpcl
    Enter the 6th item: parcel
    Enter the 7th item: pclqa
    Enter the 8th item: parcel-upd
    Enter the 9th item: centroid-chg
    Enter the 10th item: area-chg
    Enter the 11th item: calc-acres
    Enter the 12th item: assr-acres
    Enter the 13th item: pcl-problem
    Enter the 14th item: lucode
    Enter the 15th item: oldpclbk
    Enter the 16th item: oldpclpg
    Enter the 17th item: oldpclno
    Enter the 18th item: pclbook
    Enter the 19th item: pclsec
    Enter the 20th item: pclpage
    Enter the 21st item: pclsubd
    Enter the 22nd item: pclno
    Enter the 23rd item:
Done entering item names (Y/N)? y
Do you wish to use the above items (Y/N)? y

  4. After entering the last item, press <return> for a blank entry.
  5. Answer yes to the dialog questions if all entries are correct. This will replace the existing INFO table, with redefined items, with a new INFO table that does not contain any redefined items.
  6. Once the PULLITEMS process is complete, you can list the items of your new INFO table.
This example illustrates the LIST before and after PULLITEMS:

    Before PULLITEMS was performed:

    Arc: items parcel.pat

  7. Load your coverage data into ArcSDE.

NOTE: Using PULLITEMS will increase the size of your coverage attribute table. As a result, your ArcSDE layer will be larger due to duplicate storage of data.
