How To: Use environment variables to set the TEMP folder for network installation of ArcView

Summary

During some operations, ArcView creates temporary files in a TEMP directory. You can use environment variables to set the TEMP folder to the same directory on a server for all ArcView clients, or to a different local folder for each client.

Procedure

  • Set the TEMP folder to a directory on the server.
    A. Set up a directory on the server and share it with full permissions.
    B. Start WordPad and navigate to the esri\av_gis30\arcview\etc directory on the server. Open the Startup file (no extension).
    C. Scroll to the bottom of the file and place the cursor after 'end' on the last line.
    D. Press the Return key twice to create some space after the last line.
    E. Type the following:
    System.SetEnvVar ("TEMP","\\<server name>\<shared directory>")
    System.SetEnvVar ("TMP","\\<server name>\<shared directory>")
    Note:
    Substitute <server name> and <shared directory> with the actual names: i.e., System.SetEnvVar ("TEMP","\\quake\avtemp")
    G. Save the file.
    Note:
This setting affects all users of the ArcView installation.
  • Set the TEMP folder to directory on the client.
    A. Create a directory on a client machine.
    B. Start ArcView on the client machine.
    C. Open a new script window.
    D. Select Load System Script from the Script menu.
    E. Select the Appl.Initialize script from the list and click Select.
    F. Scroll to the bottom of the file and place the cursor after 'end' on the last line.
    G. Press the Return key twice to create some space after the last line.
    H. Type the following:
    System.SetEnvVar ("TEMP","<local drive>:\<localdirectory>")
    System.SetEnvVar ("TMP","<local drive>:\<localdirectory>")
    I. Compile the script.
    J. Select Properties from the Script menu.
    K. Rename the script to Appl.Initialize and click OK.
    L. Move the cursor to an empty area on the button bar and double-click to open the Customize window.
    M. Click Make Default.
    Note:
This procedure creates a default.apr in the user's HOME directory. This setting will affect all users whose HOME directories point to this default.apr.
