Error: Bad command or file name

Solution or Workaround

Summary

Import coverages from Trimble GPS yields this message:

   Bad command or file name

The resulting coverages do not have any attributes.

Cause

Trimble export creates an SML that calls dBase. dBase populates the empty fields from ASCII data. If the system doesn't have dBase installed, the resulting coverages will not have any attributes.

Solution

1. Export from Trimble using the ARC/INFO - INFO option

2. Rename the <cover>.inf to inf.sml

3. Remove the first line (ARC statement) of the inf.sml file.

4. Edit the <cover>.sml to replace the line:

   INFO <cover>.inf

With:

   TABLES INF.SML

5. Start ARC and type &RUN <covername>.sml
