Error: Bad command or file name

Solution or Workaround

Summary

Upon starting ARC, the following message appears:

   Bad command or file name

Cause

The PC is not configured properly to run PC ARC/INFO. The following are common configuration problems:

1. The path to PC ARC/INFO's command directory is not in the search path statement or is not recognized.
2. The software is not able to unpack the ARC start-up executables.
3. There is not enough environment space for PC ARC/INFO to run.

Solution

1. Make sure the path to the command directory is defined by the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT. This statement is limited to about 97 characters, so exclude unnecessary paths.

2. Make sure there is sufficient disk space available on the drive containing the ARCEXE directory for PKZIP to unzip the executables. Those zip files are stored in the C:\ARCEXE\PROGRAMS directory. About 2 MB of disk space should be sufficient.

3. Make sure the environment space defined by the SHELL statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT is adequate. PC ARC/INFO requires a minimum of 512 bytes to run, doubling the size is not a bad idea.

   SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM /e:1024 /p

Note:
Troubleshooting tip: Manually type at the DOS prompt the ARC related lines from the AUTOEXEC.BAT. For example:

Code:
c:\>PATH C:\ARCEXE\CMD
c:\>SET ARC=C:\ARCEXE
c:\>SET CGIPATH=C:\ARCEXE\CGI
c:\>ARC

If this starts ARC, then the problem is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT. Follow steps 1 through 3. If the error still occurs, move the command directory ahead in the PATH statement.
