How To: Create file names of greater than 8 characters on NetWare

Procedure

Summary:

How to store and access files and directories with non-DOS-compatible names from a NetWare server.

Cause:

By default, NetWare servers do not support file names longer than eight characters.

Solution:

You can create longer file names, store non-DOS-compatible data, or edit data on a NetWare server by loading the OS/2 name space file (OS2.NAM) to the server volume.

At the NetWare server prompt, type:

LOAD OS2.NAM

then,

ADD NAME SPACE OS2 TO <volume_name>

Notes:

OS2.NAM is shipped with the 3.x and 4.x versions of the NetWare operating system.

The name space file has a drawback, it consumes memory on the server. See the NetWare documentation for more details.

A name space file for Mac and NFS is also available. You can download this file, as well as an updated bug-fixed version of the OS/2 from the support area in the Novell Web Site. Search for "OS2.NAM" to get the most current version of a self extracting executable.
