HOW TO

Transfer point attributes to line attributes

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Procedure

Instructions provided describe how to transfer information (attributes) from a point coverage's .PAT to a line coverage's .AAT.

Solution:

Follow the 4-step process below to transfer the attributes from a point to a line.

1. Do an ARC ADDITEM to the line coverage's .AAT to add the names and definitions of the attributes to be transferred from the point coverage.

2. Run the ARC NEAR command. This adds the cover# item from the .AAT onto
the .PAT. This item will be used next in an INFO relate.

3. Go into INFO and relate the .AAT to the .PAT.

4. CALC the related items to the selected items.

The sample below demonstrates this process.

In this example, there are two coverages: POINTCOV and LINECOV. POINTCOV has in its .PAT an item named soiltype, defined as 5 5 I. The goal is to put the attribute information found in soiltype onto the arcs of LINECOV.

Arc: additem linecov.aat linecov.aat soiltype 5 5 i
Arc: near pointcov linecov line 5
Arc: info

ENTER COMMAND >SEL POINTCOV.PAT
ENTER COMMAND >RELATE LINECOV.AAT 1 BY LINECOV# LINK
ENTER COMMAND >CALC $1SOILTYPE = SOILTYPE

Repeat the ADDITEM and CALC step as many times as necessary to transfer additional items from the point coverage to the line coverage.
