Article ID: 41421
Software:  ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced 10.2 ArcGIS for Desktop Standard 10.2 ArcGIS for Desktop Basic 10.2
Platforms:  Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, Server 2012, Server 2008 R2

Summary

The instructions provided describe how to upgrade to ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop from ArcGIS 10.0 or ArcGIS 10.1.

To use existing licenses of ArcGIS for Desktop Single-Use, or License Manager for Concurrent-Use on a machine other than one currently running ArcGIS 10.0 or 10.1, deauthorize the licenses from the current ArcGIS 10.0 or 10.1 machine prior to authorizing the licenses on the new ArcGIS 10.2 machine.

To certify ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop on a machine other than the current ArcGIS 10.1 machine, before upgrading the production systems, it may be necessary to request temporary licenses from Esri Customer Care if no other licenses are available.

Procedure

The ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop setup package is designed to detect and upgrade existing installations of ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop (including SP1). When upgrading, there is no need to uninstall ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop.

ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop Concurrent-Use requires a connection to an ArcGIS 10.2 License Manager; it cannot connect to older versions. However, an ArcGIS 10.0 or 10.1 client can connect to an ArcGIS 10.2 License Manager. Upgrade the License Manager to version 10.2 before upgrading to ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop Concurrent-Use.

Upgrading the ArcGIS 10.1 License Manager to 10.2 -show me-

It is not required to uninstall version 10.1 (including SP1) of the License Manager to upgrade an ArcGIS 10.1 machine. The setup program applies the ArcGIS 10.2 License Manager version and retains the authorization and configuration information in the upgrade. The upgrade is installed to a 'License10.2' folder in the same location as the parent folder of the previous version.

Upgrade the Existing ArcGIS 10.1 License Manager

1. Open the License Server.
• For Windows - Navigate to Start > Programs > ArcGIS > License Manager > License Server Administrator.

• For UNIX/Linux - The License Server Administrator can be run from the installation location using the following command:

<installation_path>/arcgis/license10.1/LSAdmin

2. Stop the License Service under the Start/Stop License service and exit the License Server Administrator.

3. Install the ArcGIS 10.2 License Manager. The installer automatically uninstalls the ArcGIS 10.1 License Manager and installs ArcGIS 10.2 License Manager.

4. Open the License Server.
• For Windows - Navigate to Start > Programs > ArcGIS > License Manager > License Server Administrator.

• For UNIX/Linux - The License Server Administrator can be run from the installation location by using the following command:

<installation_path>/arcgis/license10.2/LSAdmin

5. Start the License Service under the Start/Stop License service and exit the License Server Administrator.

ArcGIS 10.2 License Manager is now ready for use.

If the ArcGIS 10.2 License Manager will be installed on a different machine than where the ArcGIS 10.1 License Manager is currently installed, and the existing ArcGIS 10.1 License Manager authorization will be used for ArcGIS 10.2, the ArcGIS 10.1 License Manager must first be deauthorized before authorizing the ArcGIS 10.2 License Manager installation. Make sure that borrowed licenses are returned before deauthorizing the 10.1 License Manager if the 10.2 License Server is going to be installed on a different machine.

Upgrading ArcGIS 10.1 to ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop -show me-

It is not necessary to uninstall ArcGIS 10.1 to upgrade to ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop. The setup applies the ArcGIS for Desktop 10.2 version and retains the authorization information in the upgrade. There is no need to deauthorize any Single-Use licenses to upgrade an existing ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 Single-Use machine. The upgrade is installed to a Desktop10.2 folder in the same location as the parent folder of the previous version.

1. Run the ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop setup program on an existing ArcGIS 10.1 machine and follow the instructions.

2. After installation, any customizations, add-ons, or third-party applications that were installed for ArcGIS 10.1 must be reapplied for ArcGIS 10.2.

3. To change the installation location (on the same ArcGIS 10.1 machine), manually uninstall ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop through Add/Remove from the Windows Control Panel before installing ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop in the new location. There is no need to deauthorize the Single-Use license.

4. If the License Manager is changed to a different machine, the upgraded ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop Concurrent-Use clients will not find the new 10.2 License Manager automatically. Run the ArcGIS Administrator after upgrading the client machines to change the License Manager and any other required settings.

ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Single-Use users: If ArcGIS 10.2 will be installed on a different machine from where ArcGIS 10.1 is currently installed, and the existing ArcGIS 10.1 authorization is going to be used for ArcGIS 10.2, the ArcGIS 10.1 product must first be deauthorized before authorizing the ArcGIS 10.2 installation.

Upgrading ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 or prior releases to ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop -show me-

Upgrade the License Manager to version 10.2 before upgrading ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 Concurrent-Use.

1. Upgrading License Manager 10.0 to License Manager 10.2

There is no need to deauthorize License Manager 10.0 if the existing License Manager 10.0 machine is going to be upgraded and an internet connection is available on the machine (authorization can be done online). For offline authorizations (no internet connection), or in cases where License Manager 10.2 is going to be installed on a different machine, deauthorize the existing licenses so that they can be used on the upgraded License Manager 10.2.

A. Return any borrowed licenses.

B. Uninstall License Manager 10.0.

C. Install License Manger 10.2. After successful installation, the License Server Administrator opens and the authorization options are displayed.

D. Authorize the licenses.
• Online Authorizations - If the licenses have not yet been authorized and the licenses were not deauthorized before, select the 'Upgrade now' option and follow the Authorization Wizard.

• Offline Authorizations - To authorized offline, or if a different license manager has been set up, and the licenses have been deauthorized, select the 'Authorize now' option and follow the Authorization Wizard.

Refer to the License Manager Reference Guide to learn more about installing the License Manager and authorizing licenses on License Manager.

License Manager 10.2 can host 10.0 and 9.X licenses as well. If all the licenses are not at version 10.2, select the appropriate version from the 'Version' drop-down menu while authorizing older licenses.

2. Upgrading ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 to ArcGIS for Desktop 10.2

For Single-Use licenses, there is no need to deauthorize if the existing ArcGIS 10.0 machine is going to be upgraded. If ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop is going to be installed on a machine other than the existing ArcGIS 10.0 machine, the license will need to be deauthorized and authorized again after installing ArcGIS 10.2 on the new machine to use the current licenses under maintenance.

A. Uninstall ArcGIS Desktop 10.0.

B. Install ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop.

C. Complete the upgrade process.

• For Concurrent-Use Licenses - After a successful installation, point to the License Manager in the software authorization wizard or open ArcGIS Administrator from the Start menu.

• For Single-Use Licenses - When prompted to upgrade the licenses after installation, click 'Yes' to complete the upgrade process.

• If the ArcGIS 10.2 setup was previously run and the upgrade process was not completed, finish the authorization process.
i. Launch ArcGIS Administrator
ii. Select Support Operations
iii. Click 'Upgrade Now...'

D. Authorize the new installation of ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop.

• Online Authorizations
i. Chose the online authorization/upgrade option.
ii. If it is the existing ArcGIS 10.0 machines that is being upgraded, the licenses are entered automatically.
iii. Follow the prompts to complete the upgrade.

• Offline Authorizations
i. Chose the offline authorization/upgrade option.
ii. The licenses are entered automatically.
iii. An upgrade/authorization file is generated.
iv. Upload this file to Esri Customer Care.
v. Double-click the resulting license file and follow the prompts in the Software Authorization Wizard to complete the authorization.

Other - See details below.

ArcGIS 9.x and 10.x are compatible with License Manager 10.2. Please see the following LM Ref Guide: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/install-guides/license-manager/10.2/#/License_Manager_installation_and_startup/007900000005000000/

Great article! It helped a lot!

Is there support docs that further explain the compatibility of previous versions of Desktop and License Manager? We are looking to do a enterprise deploy with some to 10.2 from 10.0 and wondering if 10.0 machines won't notice or if they will have to be redirected to a new LM.

The article needs to be updated.

Good article, the only thing that they left out was where do you get the 10.2 download. It does not show up anywhere in ESRI's support section. Without having access to the actual program, this article is pretty worthless.
