Summary

Instructions provided describe how to activate and authorize the software for ArcInfo and ArcEditor license levels.

Before accessing the ArcGIS Desktop 10 evaluation software, the provided authorization number must be activated online, and then authorized within ArcGIS Administrator.

Procedure

The ArcGIS Desktop 10 Trial Software - Trial Software Help and Resources page provides detailed information about the Education and Esri Press Edition of the software. It describes the download and installation of the software, and gives instructions about how to use the programs.

The evaluation software comes in two license types:

• ArcGIS ArcInfo Desktop 10 Education Edition - ArcInfo license level for single-use that is 365-day education software.

• ArcGIS Desktop 10 Free Trial (Standard or Esri Press Edition) - ArcEditor license level for single-use that is either 180-day or 60-day evaluation software.

The instructions below describe how to activate and authorize the software for both license types.

The following steps assume the evaluation software is already installed.

  • ArcGIS ArcInfo Desktop 10 Education Edition (365 days):
    1. Browse to ArcGIS ArcInfo Desktop 10 Education Edition - Activate your authorization number.

    2. Enter your Esri Global Account user name and password. If you do not have an Esri Global Account, click Create an Account and create one.

    3. You will be prompted with two choices, either "I have an ArcGIS Education Edition DVD" or "I have an ArcGIS Education Edition authorization code". You can click either button and, once prompted, type the evaluation number (a 12-digit number beginning with EVA) in the field to activate it.

    4. Select Activate ArcGIS 10 or Submit. A message appears stating the number has been activated.

    5. The software is now ready to be authorized. Navigate to ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator > Desktop and select 'ArcInfo single-use' for the license level.

    6. CLick the Authorize Now button and complete the authorization wizard to authorize the software.

  • ArcGIS Desktop 10 Free Trial (Standard or Esri Press edition) (180- or 60-days):
    1. Browse to either of the following two links:

ArcGIS Desktop 10 Free Trial. Activate the authorization number for the 180-day trial of ArcGIS Desktop 10 at this link. A request for the software can also be submitted.

Activate your authorization number. This link only provides the 180-day trial of ArcGIS Desktop 10.

    2. Type your Esri Global Account user name and password. If you do not have an Esri Global Account, click Create an Account and create one.

    3. Type the evaluation number (a 12-digit number beginning with EVA) in the field to activate it.

    4. The software is now ready to be authorized. Navigate to ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator > Desktop and select 'ArcEditor single-use' for the license level.

    5. Click the Authorize Now button and complete the authorization wizard to authorize the software.

The article is incorrect or the solution didn’t work.

I do not have the choice between: "I have an ArcGIS Education Edition DVD" or "I have an ArcGIS Education Edition authorization code". Why is that?

Other - See details below.

What a totally convoluted means to get a temporary license. I am disgusted, yet fascinated...So now I have to call...Which I can almost with 100% certainty predict will be a cluster of the highest order.

Same problem as SupremeTeam. Link doesn't work. Therefore the whole article is kind of useless.

The authorization link provided for the Education Edition no longer works. I've called customer service and they obviously have not been trained to relay the updated version as well. Disappointed.

Other - See details below.

I activated my software and installed it on one computer and then my computer died, so now I'm installing it again on a different one. On the new one I can't seem to get it activated. Got an error message saying that there was no license info. in the system file. Is this due to already activating it once?

I have followed the directions, but, when I submit I get an "Unable to prepare your authorization" error. Where can we find more detailed troubleshooting information?

The article needs to be updated.

It would be beneficial if this article was updated to be clearer or more specific in terms of the steps for Activating your Authorization Number and Authorizing the Software. Many users are not at all familiar with Esri's process for doing this and typically end up assuming that once they've Activated their Authorization Number they should be able to run and use the software. I know that step 5 specifies that 'The software is now ready to be authorized' and directs the user to the ArcGIS Administrator, but many users don't understand what or that they need to do anything other than the first step. It would be preferable if this article could be expanded on to include screen captures of each step as well as a bolded note after step 4 stating "Wait! You're not done yet. You still need to Authorize your software." In addition to this it would also be invaluable to include a very short video that demonstrates the whole process so that users would have a walk through to guide them through this process.

I would like to see a new article that discusses the topic outlined below.

This all sounds ok BUT I cannot even download the software from the ArcGIS Desktop 10 Education Edition DVD. I have completely uninstalled the Arc9.3 edition, which worked perfectly. Why am I getting now an 'Installer information message' saying that "This operating system is not supported, or a service pack is required on this operating system". I have a Vista 32 bit operating system using Microsoft. please help!
