Question
Is Python Win installed in ArcGIS Desktop 10?
Answer
No, with ArcGIS Desktop 10 the Python Win32 extension is no longer installed, but any existing scripts created using win32com still work properly. PythonWin32 setup is available on the installation media for the following products:
ArcGIS 10 Desktop
ArcGIS 10 Engine Runtime
ArcGIS Server Workgroup 10
ArcGIS Server Enterprise 10 for Windows.
The PythonWin32 extension setup requires an existing installation of Python 2.6.2, which is installed by the ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Engine, and ArcGIS Server setups.
Esri has developed a new Python module to support the latest version of Python on multiple platforms such as Windows, UNIX, and Linux. ArcGIS no longer installs PythonWin because the recommended methodology for creating the geoprocessor now uses this new Python module.
Install the PythonWin program, pywin32-212.win32-py2.6.exe, found on the installation CD. This will install win32com and enable the existing scripts to work as they did before.

re: ArcGIS no longer installs PythonWin, because .... such as Windows, UNIX, and Linux. Suggestion: expand this overly long and technically dense sentence. After re-reading this sentence several times, I finally understood it's meaning and intent. Break it out into a more readable paragraph. thanks
