Technical Article   Error:  MS Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! abnormal program termination

Error Message

When opening ArcMap or opening data in ArcMap, one of the following errors occurs:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\DesktopAdmin.exe
abnormal program termination"

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\ArcMap.exe
abnormal program termination"

Cause

The Microsoft Data Access Object (DAO) driver needs to be registered.

Solution or Workaround

To manually register the Microsoft DAO driver, follow the steps below:


Windows XP 32-bit / Windows 2003 Server

1) Go to Start > Run, type CMD, and click OK to bring up the command prompt.

2) Type in the following:

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO\dao350.dll"

3) Press Enter. Then type in the following and press Enter:

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO\dao360.dll"


Windows XP 64-bit

1) Go to Start > Run, type CMD, and click OK to bring up the command prompt.

2) Type in the following and press Enter:

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO\dao360.dll"

    I followed the article’s instructions, but experienced another problem. I’ve provided details below.

    I receive either the error message that the module is not found or that regsvr is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Any suggestions?
