Does ArcGIS 9.x support Microsoft Windows Vista?

Answer

Windows Vista:
The Microsoft Windows Vista operating system extends the Windows platform with some additional functionality. However, this operating system also poses some challenges for applications running on Vista, as some functionality and behavior from Windows XP has changed. Supported Windows Vista editions are Enterprise, Business, Home Premium, and Ultimate.

ArcGIS 9.3 on Windows Vista:
ArcGIS 9.3 fully supports Windows Vista as a supported operating system for all ArcGIS 9.3 products.

 ArcGIS Server 9.3, including ArcSDE 9.3, supports Windows Vista for basic testing and application development use only. It is not recommended for deployment in a production environment.

ArcGIS 9.2 on Windows Vista:
The following ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 4 (SP4) products are supported on Windows Vista: ArcReader, ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo Desktop, ArcInfo Workstation, ArcGIS Desktop Extensions, and ArcGIS Engine. Service Pack 4 for ArcGIS 9.2 is required for Windows Vista support; however, there are some serious known issues that users should be aware of before deploying any of these ArcGIS Desktop products on Windows Vista.

 ArcGIS Server 9.2, including ArcSDE 9.2, Image Server 9.2, and ArcIMS 9.2 are not supported on Windows Vista.


If ArcInfo Workstation is being installed, read the Installing ArcInfo Workstation 9.2 on Vista document first.

In the testing of ArcGIS 9.2 (Desktop and Engine), a number of issues were discovered that appear to be specific to the Windows Vista platform.

Some of these issues are known issues with Windows Vista, some are fixed in currently available Microsoft patches, and others will be fixed in future fixes available from Microsoft.

What are the Microsoft patches that resolve issues with Windows Vista?
Answer
There are two Microsoft patches required to support ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 4 (SP4) running on Windows Vista.

1) 'ArcGIS 9.2 SP4 Export / Printing Patch for Vista' addresses a problem with a low level function in Windows Vista that impacts ArcMap's ability to print and export. Details on this issue and how to download the Microsoft patch are provided here:

2) 'Windows Help System for Windows Vista' addresses a problem that occurs in portions of the ArcGIS help system. This is because Windows Vista does not include support for older Windows help files. Details on this issue and instructions on how to download the Microsoft patch are provided here:

Are ArcGIS products supported with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008?
Answer
For version 9.2 and earlier

At this time, ArcGIS products are not supported with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.

This article refers to ArcGIS 9.x products including:
- ArcInfo
- ArcEditor
- ArcView
- ArcGIS Engine
- ArcGIS Server (including ArcSDE)
- ArcGIS Explorer
- ArcGIS Mobile
- ArcIMS
- all ArcGIS extensions

ArcGIS 9.2 and earlier versions of developer products are currently not supported with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.


Other issues are specific to running ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 on Windows Vista and have been fixed in ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.

Previous Versions of ArcGIS on Windows Vista:
Previous versions of ArcGIS prior to ArcGIS 9.2 SP4 are not supported on Windows Vista.

ArcGIS Explorer Version 480 and higher:
ArcGIS Explorer is supported on Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

Previous Versions of ArcGIS Explorer on Windows Vista:
Previous versions of ArcGIS Explorer prior to ArcGIS Explorer 480 are not supported on Windows Vista.

ArcView GIS 3.x:
ArcView 3.x is not supported on the Windows Vista operating system, and there are no plans to support ArcView GIS 3.x on this operating system in the future.

ArcPad:
ArcPad and ArcPad Application Builder 7.0.1 (and previous versions) products are not supported on the Microsoft Windows Vista release. ArcPad 7.1 and ArcPad Application Builder 7.1 both support Windows Vista.

MapObjects Windows and MapObjects Java:
MapObjects Windows 2.4 and MapObjects-Java 2.2 and 2.3 are not supported on Windows Vista. ESRI is not certifying any new environments for MapObjects-Windows, and there are no plans to support Vista with MapObjects-Java.

The article contains a typographical or grammatical error.

On page 1 of the document KnownIssuesWithArcGISDesktop92sp4andWindowsVista.doc, there are two hyperlinks to Microsoft KnowledgeBase articles. Both hyperlinks have linked to the same KB article, but are totally separate issues. For NIM012180, I don't know which KB article really addresses the "exit error" problem. For NIM012231, the KB article cited is the correct article for ArcCatalog beeping.

The article is incorrect or the solution didn’t work.

The article refers to a Word document one can down load. It is the Word Document that may have the error since my computer lacks the key referred to in the following: Workaround: This problem can be prevented by changing a registry key in Vista. You can change the name of the resolved file name via the registry to follow the same pattern as XP used so that the folder name comes at the end of the new name rather than in the middle. The key to change is: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\NamingTemplates CopyNameTemplate = "Copy () of %s" NOTE: The disadvantage of this is that it is a global setting that affects all copy operations.

The article has missing, misleading, or conflicting information.

Hi, How does this FAQ/article relate to the article 31074? http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.techarticles.articleShow&d=31074 There seems to be a conflicting message or duplicate posting about support for Vista. When I search for Vista on the support.esri.com, this article does not come back as a result. Thanks, Matt
