Before Beginning
Close all ArcGIS Desktop applications.
Procedure
- Download Taper.dll from the Related Information below and place it in the Bin folder in the ArcGIS install folder: ..\ArcGIS\Bin.
The most common install location for ArcGIS is C:\Program Files\ArcGIS. However, it may be installed in any user specified location.
..\ArcGIS\Bin is the suggested download location for Taper.dll. However, it can be stored anywhere on the computer.
- To register the dll, click Start > Run. In the Run dialog, type in:
regsvr32 "c:\program files\arcgis\bin\taper.dll"
Change the location of dll to match your location, if required. Double quotes around the path name are required. - In the Bin folder, locate the file 'Categories.exe' and double-click it to open the Component Category Manager.

The Component Category Manager is a registry for all ArcGIS components. Do not modify, delete or add anything to the Component Category Manager except for the steps below.
It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding.

- Scroll down the list to the category called ESRI Representation geometric effect.
-show me- - Click the Add Object button. Navigate to the folder where the Taper.dll resides, for example, ..\ArcGIS\Bin.

- Click Open and the Component Category Manager updates:
-show me- - Click Exit to close the Component Category Manager.
