Instructions provided show how to select multiple values within a field using the Select By Attributes tool.


Using the word 'IN' allows for multiple values to be selected without adding the field name each time.

  1. Open the attribute table of the layer, select the Options button on the lower right, and click Select By Attributes.
  2. Double-click the field that contains the desired values to populate the dialog box below. Add a space after the field name and type in the word 'IN' (no quotes).
  3. Select the parentheses icon above.-show me-

  4. Inside the parentheses select or type the desired values. Separate each value with a comma.-show me-

     If the field is a text field, be sure to apply single quotes around each value.

  5. Click Apply.

I would like to see a new article that discusses the topic outlined below.

I would like to select multiple values with the "Select By Attributes tool" using a list of values say, from an excel spreadsheet. Is this possible or there a limit to the number of values in the query?

Why is this description not INCLUDED in the help section in ArcMap when you click on HELP? Why did I have to look for this information on the web, especially since this is such a common task????
