Description

Adding any raster produces the following error message:

"Invalid Raster Dataset"

When opening map documents that contain raster data sets, all data sources for the raster data sets are broken.

Cause

Another imaging application was installed on the computer that conflicts with the file rdo.dll.

Solution or Workaround

Re-register rdo.dll.

  1. Close all ArcGIS applications.
  2. Navigate to Start > Run.
  3. Type the following:

    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\ESRI\Raster\bin\ntx86\rdo.dll"

  4. A message appears stating the registry of the dll succeeded. Click OK.

The above applies to Version 9.3.1 and earlier. The rdo.dll file does not exist in Version 10 and higher.

Other - See details below.

I am having the same issue as described with an arc info install on windows 7 professional 64-bit install. The rdo.dll file does not exist and class raster files that previouly opened without issue are not readable in arc catalog and arc map 10 (sevise pack 4). Is there a similar fix available for this version of windows?

With respect to the cause of the problem ("Another imaging application was installed on the computer that conflicts with the file rdo.dll"), does anybody know which applications in particular cause this problem? I'm having problems with the rdo.dll as well- although when installing ArcGIS. I was having the same problems as explained in the article but tried to reinstall ArcGIS to try and solve the problem. Now, I cannot install abecause the setup hangs on rdo.dll. Cheers, Matt

Great article! It helped a lot!

This solved my problem!!! My mxd would not even open - ArcGIS just said it encountered a problem and had to close. "Sorry for the inconvenience." I couldn't tell that the paths were broken, but I thought I'd try this solution anyway, since I had installed a new program. It worked. THANK YOU!!
