Summary

Instructions provided show how to create a Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) and add it to the data frame. The US National Grid (USNG) is the same as MGRS. These steps can be used to add USNG information to a map.

To add the MGRS Grid, the coordinate system of the ArcMap data frame must be using a UTM coordinate system.

Procedure

Follow the steps below:

  1. Turn off the Wizard Mode in Tools > Options > General.
  2. Open the Style Manager at Tools > Styles > Style Manager.
  3. Expand the personal style.
  4. Select Reference Systems.
  5. Right-click, on the right under the name column, and select new > MGRS Grid.
  6. Click OK on the Reference Systems dialog box.
  7. Close the Style Manager.
  8. Switch to Layout View.
  9. Open the Data Frame Properties and select the Grids tab.
  10. Click New Grid and select MGRS Grid.
  11. Click Properties. Change the properties of the grid, clicking through the tabs in right-to-left order.
