Summary
Read the following important information before proceeding:
- The input E00 file cannot be placed in a directory that has a space in the name or in the path to the directory.
- The output coverage or grid cannot be written to a directory that has a space in the name or in the path to the directory.
- The output coverage or grid name cannot be over 13 characters long.
- The output coverage or grid name cannot contain spaces. Underscores are permitted.
- The output coverage or grid name cannot contain special characters; for example, #, @, %.
- The coverage name can be the same as the original E00 file, but this is not required.
- There is no extension for the coverage name. For example, if the E00 file is named 'parcels.e00', the output coverage can be named 'parcels' with no extension.
- The output coverage name is in lower case.
- At ArcGIS 9.2 and earlier versions, folder names in the path to input or output cannot be over 8 characters. At version 9.3, this restriction is removed, so folder names can be over 8 characters long.

The article needs to be updated.
This article is in need of a major rewrite. * The Arc 10.x instructions should be first. * The Arc 9.x instructions should have instructions to load the Arc 8x toolbar (see comment already posted). After that, you can include the information that ArcInfo users can then use the Coverage Tools tool. If ArcInfo is not installed, there are no Coverage Tools in the System Tools. Why send people to look in the programs menu? * An entry should be added for ArcInfo Workstation 8.x - 10.x at the end instead of confusingly having it in there as an extra step under 9.x.

I have suggested related resources/links that can enhance this article. See below.
How about letting us know that in 9.3.1 and beyond, you must use ArcCatalog! 1) Open ArcCatalog. 2) Click on View -> Toolbars -> ArcView 8.x Tools 3) When you do a dockable toolbar will appear called, Conversion Tools. 4) Click Conversion Tools -> import from Interchange file. 5) Run tool with your .e00 file.

The article is incorrect or the solution didn’t work.
ArcMap 9.2 build 1324 The following procedures do not work. There is no option to add ArcView 8.x Tools toolbar in the Tools / Customize / Toolbars tab. Procedure ArcGIS 9.x All ArcGIS licenses 1. Start ArcCatalog. 2. Navigate to Tools > Customize > Toolbars tab. 3. Check the box for the ArcView 8.x Tools toolbar and click Close. E00 files should be quick and easy to import, without restriction. It should not be another way to force people to buy an ArcInfo license.

The article needs to be updated.
The batch import function is not available from the import interchange to coverage tool, and the tool is no longer in the location specified in this article, in ArcGIS 9.2

The article has missing, misleading, or conflicting information.
The instructions for using the workstation command appear to be incomplete. In any case, I can't make heads or tails of it. I need to import thousands of e00 files into shape files, so I can use arcgis to merge them all together spatially. How do I do this quickly and efficiently?

I followed the article’s instructions, but experienced another problem. I’ve provided details below.
The batch ability of this tool is almost useless. If I have 10 or 100 E00 files to import, I have to add each one separately. That's ridiculous and speaks to the poor thought put into ESRI products in general. Please fix this and the rest of your products to properly consider how people actually work, and not what's expedient for your programmers or bottom line.

Other - See details below.
What kind of lazy monopolistic programming does not allow for a space in the path name? This procedure is the saddest excuse for a user-friendly interface I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The article has missing, misleading, or conflicting information.
In the warning that reads "If the e00 file is .ZIPped," it should instead say "If the .e00 file is .TARred": the way this warning is currently written, it leads users to believe that the WinZip error applies only to .ZIP files, when apparently it actually applies to .TAR files.

the article was great. The location of the tool is stupid. What the heck is Toolbox for if not for ALL of these tools?! I want one place to look for all of the import/export/processing tools available.

yes but... how does the batch operation work?

The article is outdated. It should direct the reader to simply use the 9.0 or 9.1 'Import from Interchange' tool located under Coverage Tools|Conversion|To Coverage which is a really stupid place to put a tool that can also import grids, info files and other formats but it is there nonetheless.

You know, how about doing the job right next time and give some information on batching?? It ain't as easy as 'toggling the Batch button'.

define how to enter the output dataset.... it will not accept anything in ArcGIS9.0
By Anonymous - 06/21/2005 8:41 PM
This article should indicate that there are tiers of licensing within ArcGIS that preclude the addition of this tool. I do not have this tool available in my toolbox, and have had a very hard time figuring out exactly why- so I assume this is because my employer bought the lowest tiered license, lacking any other explanation. I would greatly appreciate a response. Thanks!

I was not able to convert a batch from interchange format. Would be nice to have explicit directions on how to do this.
