Question

How is metadata stored for ArcSDE geodatabases?

Answer

The metadata for an ArcSDE feature class is stored in a table called SDE.GDB_USERMETADATA. The metadata for feature classes are identified in this table by the owner and table name (and possibly database name) of the base table. In Oracle, SDE.GDB_USERMETADATA is described like this:

SQL> describe sde.gdb_usermetadata
Name Null? Type
------------------------------- -------- ----

ID NOT NULL NUMBER(38)
DATABASENAME VARCHAR2(32)
OWNER NOT NULL VARCHAR2(32)
NAME NOT NULL VARCHAR2(160)
DATASETTYPE NOT NULL NUMBER(38)
XML NOT NULL LONG RAW
