  1. [data transfer] Data compression that provides high compression ratios (for example 10:1 to 100:1), but does not retain all the information in the data. In GIS, lossy compression is used to compress raster datasets that will be used as background images, but is not suitable for raster datasets used for analysis or deriving other data products.
