geosynchronous

See Also: geostationary

  1. [astronomy] Positioned in an orbit moving west to east with an orbital period equal to the earth's rotational period. If a satellite is in a geosynchronous orbit that is circular and lies in the equatorial plane, it is geostationary because it remains over one point on the equator. If not, the satellite appears to make a figure eight once a day between the latitudes that correspond to its angle of inclination over the equator.
