dithering

  1. [graphics (computing)] The approximation of shades of gray or colors in a computer image made by arranging pixels of black and white or other colors in alternate layers. The technique gives the appearance of a wider range of color or shades than is actually present in the image. It is widely used to improve the appearance of images displayed on devices with limited color palettes. dithering Illustration
