Introduction
EsriĀ® announces the ArcGIS 10.3 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Geodesic Buffer Method Patch. This patch addresses an issue where under specific circumstances incorrect buffer features may be created in the output. When the input feature class spatial reference is State Plane (feet), a buffer distance in miles is specified and the buffer method parameter is set to GEODESIC incorrect buffer features may be created. It deals specifically with the issues listed below under Issues Addressed with this patch.
Issues Addressed with this patch
- BUG-000083937 - When running buffer with buffer distance units in miles on a feature class in a state plane feet projection using the geodesic method parameter, the output buffer is larger than it should be.
Installing this patch on Windows
Installation Steps:
ArcGIS 10.3 for Desktop, Engine or Server must be installed before installing this patch.
- Download the appropriate file to a location other than your ArcGIS installation location.

- Double-click ArcGIS-103-<Product>-GBM-Patch.msp to start the setup process.
NOTE: If double clicking on the MSP file does not start the setup installation, you can start the setup installation manually by using the following command:
msiexec.exe /p [location of Patch]\ArcGIS-103-<Product>-GBM-Patch.msp
Installing this patch on Linux
Installation Steps:
Complete the following install steps as the ArcGIS Install owner. The Install owner is the owner of the arcgis folder.
ArcGIS 10.3 for Engine or Server must be installed before installing this patch.
- Download the appropriate file to a location other than your ArcGIS installation location.
Checksum (Md5) ArcGIS Engine ArcGIS-103-E-GBM-Patch-lx.tar 82FBDB389321B171BA6055659BC9095C ArcGIS for Server ArcGIS-103-S-GBM-Patch-lx.tar BAB4B1250A376D5DD1E6FCFF01159BAC - Make sure you have write access to your ArcGIS installation location, and that no one is using ArcGIS.
Extract the specified tar file by typing:
% tar -xvf ArcGIS-103-<Product>-GBM-Patch-lx.tar
- Start the installation by typing:
% ./applypatch
This will start the dialog for the menu-driven installation procedure. Default selections are noted in parentheses ( ). To quit the installation procedure, type 'q' at any time.
