To create a GIS design for an Agriculture Data Model requires consideration to many business operations and scientific disciplines. The farmer's spatial operations differ from those of a government agency, or the research of an agricultural scientist. The following five thematic groups have emerged during our research and are the most important conceptual groupings of the data model: Agribusiness, Facilities, Cadastre, Farm Production and Basemap.
Agriculture requires a more structured and standardized information environment in the supply chain following commodities from the farm field to the finished food products. The model will help implement a GIS at the farm, for multinational and local agribusinesses, and within agricultural government agencies. This data model provides a framework to help quickly develop and implement an agricultural geographic database and share information between businesses, adhere to regulations, and provide a useful tool for the agriculture community.
