ESRI announces the ArcSDE 9.0 SQL Server Select By Attributes Patch. This Patch addresses an issue with the ArcMAP Selection By Attributes function not returning any rows from a current selection set. It deals specifically with the issue listed below. We highly recommend that all ArcSDE 9.0 SP3 for SQL Server users download and install this Patch at their earliest convenience.

Issues Fixed with this Patch


    CQ00248869 - In ArcMAP when attempting to select by attributes against an existing selection set the selection set is cleared and the query returns no rows.

Installing the Patch

Since this Patch replaces a file from ArcSDE 9.0 Service Pack 3, ArcSDE 9.0 Service Pack 3 must be installed before you can install this Patch. It is strongly recommended that you back up your database including all previous ArcSDE system tables and user layer data before upgrading your ArcSDE installation. Install this patch using your sa user account.

Server Install for Windows -

  1. Make sure you have write access to the ArcSDE installation folder, that no one is using ArcSDE, and that the ArcSDE service is down.


  2. Download the setup file to a location other than the ArcSDE installation folder:

  4. Double-click the setup file to start the install process.


  5. When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.


  6. To upgrade, run sdesetupmssql. Failure to do so may cause problems in starting the service or with connecting to the service.

    % sdesetupmssql -o upgrade -u sa -p <password>

  7. As the SDE user, run the following command to restart the ArcSDE service:

    C:\> sdemon -o start

Client Install for Windows -

  1. Make sure you have write access to the ArcSDE client installation folder:.


  2. Download the setup file to a location other than the ArcSDE client installation folder:

  4. Double-click the setup file to start the install process.


  5. When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.

  1. If you connect to ArcSDE 9.0 using ArcGIS 9.0 SP3, ArcIMS 9.0 SP3., or ArcView GIS 3.3 with DBA 2.1e, please follow the steps below to install this Service Pack to your ArcGIS 9.0, ArcIMS 9.0, or ArcView GIS 3.3 with DBA 2.1e installation folder:

  2. Before you start, make sure you have write access to the installation folder, then download the zip file to that location:

    sde90-SQL-SBA-Patch.zip 1 MB

  3. ArcIMS only, stop the ArcIMS Tasker, ArcIMS Monitor, ArcIMS Application Server (in that order).

  4. Use WinZip to extract the new file from sde90-SQL-SBA-Patch.zip to the appropriate installation folder, see list below:

    • ArcGIS Desktop, Server, Engine, Reader, or ArcView 9 - <installation-folder>\arcgis\bin
    • ArcGIS Workstation - <installation-folder>\arcexe9x\bin
    • ArcView GIS - <installation-folder>\av_gis30\arcview\(bin32 & DCONNECT\LIB)
    • Depending on the ArcIMS Setup features installed, the SDE client file could be located in one or more of the following locations:
      • C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\bin
      • C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\ArcIMS\IndexBuilder
      • C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\ArcIMS\Metadata\Commands
      • C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\ArcIMS\Server\bin

  5. ArcIMS only, restart ArcIMS Application Server, ArcIMS Monitor and ArcIMS Tasker (in that order).

Identifying QFE files on your machine

To check for the presence of Quick Fixes, examine the unique identification information by a (right click, properties, version tab) action under Explorer. With only a few exceptions, all files modified as part of a QFE distribution can be uniquely identified in this manner. Under Windows 2000, select 'Product Version' under the 'Item name' column to see the unique identifier.
