ArcGIS 10 SP2 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Page Layout Map Surround Patch

Published: May 24, 2011

Summary

This patch addresses a crash in ArcMap when opening or saving certain map documents in ArcGIS 10.0 Service Pack 2. Any map document that includes a map surround, and has been saved to version 9.0/9.1 or 8.3 using the "Save a Copy" command can trigger the crash. As there is no way to know if a document was saved to a previous version, we recommend that all users install this patch.

Description

Esri® announces the ArcGIS 10 SP2 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Page Layout Map Surround Patch. This patch addresses an issue introduced at 10.0 Service Pack 2 that causes ArcMap to crash when certain documents are opened or saved. The problem is believed to effect a large number of existing map documents that contain page layout map surrounds, and we recommend that all users with workflows that interact with the page layout install this patch. It deals specifically with the issues listed below under Issues Addressed with this Patch.

Issues Addressed with this Patch

  • NIM067980 - Crash when switching views after opening mxd saved to 9.0/9.1 or 8.3.
  • Description: Some map documents (MXDs) that worked properly in ArcGIS 10 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or prior cannot be opened or saved after installing ArcGIS 10 Service Pack 2 (SP2). In cases where the map document opens successfully, ArcMap may crash when switching between Data View and Layout View or when working with map surrounds such as Legend, North Arrow, Scale Bar, and Scale Text.

The crash is triggered by any map document that includes a map surround and has been saved to version 9.0/9.1 or 8.3 using the "Save a Copy" command. The affected documents may have had the save to prior version performed by any version of ArcGIS, not just 10.0 sp2. In many cases, it may not be obvious which documents have been affected.
