  3. Stop your current ArcSDE service.

  4. % sdemon -o shutdown

NOTE (AIX only): You must remove any inactive libraries that are loaded into memory before proceeding to the next step. Not doing so will result in an installation error. To remove them, as ROOT user, type:

    # /usr/sbin/slibclean

(Optional) To list the libraries loaded into memory, as ROOT user, type:

    # /usr/sbin/genkld

  11. To upgrade, run sdesetup<dbms>. Failure to do so may cause problems in starting the service or with connecting to the service. Using Oracle 9i as an example (for details on using the sdesetup<dbms> command for your database, please go to the admin command guide under the %SDEHOME%\documentation folder for more information on using this command):

  12. % sdesetupora9i -o upgrade –u sde –p <SDE_Admin_password>

  13. (Oracle only) After the upgrade completes, you may revoke the following permissions from the SDE user account:

Server Install for Windows

    Windows Installation Notes:

It is important to keep the all versions of ArcGIS products installed on a machine in sync to avoid any software conflicts.

To find out what products are currently installed on your machine, download the ServicePackFinder91.exe utility and run it from your local machine. This utility provides a report detailing which ArcGIS products are currently installed on your machine. This will help determine which product Service Packs you should install on your machine. The report also details which service packs have been installed. The report is displayed when the utility is run and a servicepack.txt log file is created in your temp folder. The Service Pack Finder utility searches for the following ArcGIS products.

ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) Includes the ArcReader fixes for the ArcReader FEATURE.
        ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit
        ArcGIS Engine Runtime
        ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit
        ArcGIS Server
        ArcGIS Server .NET ADF
        ArcGIS Server Java ADF
        ArcGIS Tutorial Data
        ArcReader standalone
        ArcIMS
        ArcSDE

NOTE (ArcIMS and ArcGIS Desktop users): If you use ArcIMS 9.1 or ArcGIS Desktop 9.1, you must also install ArcIMS 9.1 Service Pack 1 or ArcGIS 9.1 Service Pack 1. For example, if you use ArcIMS 9.1 and ArcSDE 9.1, install both ArcIMS 9.1 Service Pack 1 and ArcSDE 9.1 Service Pack 1. Since ArcIMS 9.1, ArcSDE 9.1 and the ArcGIS 9.1 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts.

NOTE (ArcGIS Server users): If you have ArcGIS Server 9.1 and any other ArcGIS product installed on your machine, we recommend that you install the ArcGIS 9.1 Server Service Pack before installing the remaining Service Packs. Since ArcGIS Server and the ArcGIS 9.1 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts.

NOTE (ArcSDE for SQL Server users): If you plan to upgrade your database to SQL Server 2005, there are certain post installation steps that must be performed manually that are outlined in the 'Setting up SQL Server 2005 for ArcSDE 9.1 SP1' Guide. You can access the Guide from here or you can save it to your system: Setup_SQL_Server_2005_for_ArcSDE_91_SP1.pdf.

This also applies if connecting to ArcSDE 9.1 SP1 using ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Engine, and ArcGIS Reader for Sun Solaris and Linux:

      • Before you start, make sure you have write access to the installation directory then download the appropriate compressed tar file to that location:

        HP-UX sde91-sp1-esri-hp.tar.Z
        14 MB
        IBM sde91-sp1-esri-ibm.tar.Z

Any modified UNIX executables (or libraries) being sent out as part of a Quick Fix will return the unique identification number for that fix when checked with the "what" command for UNIX and the "strings" command for Linux. For example, to display the identification string for this Service Pack on UNIX, type:

    %what gsrvr.static | grep QFE

    QFE-SDE-91-CQ00264059

    Windows
