Installing the Service Pack

Installation Notes

  • It is important to keep the all versions of ArcGIS products installed on a machine in sync to avoid any software conflicts.

To find out what products are currently installed on your machine, download the ServicePackFinder90.exe utility and run it from your local machine. This utility provides a report detailing which ArcGIS products are currently installed on your machine. This will help determine which product Service Packs you should install on your machine. The report also details which service packs have been installed. The report is displayed when the utility is run and a servicepack.txt log file is created in your temp folder. The Service Pack Finder utility searches for the following ArcGIS products.

    • ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) Includes the ArcReader fixes for the ArcReader FEATURE.
    • ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit
    • ArcGIS Engine Runtime
    • ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit
    • ArcGIS Server
    • ArcGIS Server .NET ADF
    • ArcGIS Server Java ADF
    • ArcGIS Tutorial Data
    • ArcReader standalone
    • ArcIMS
    • ArcSDE

NOTE (ArcIMS and ArcSDE users): If you use ArcIMS 9.0 or ArcSDE 9.0, you must also install ArcIMS 9.0 Service Pack 3 or ArcSDE 9.0 Service Pack 3. For example, if you use ArcIMS 9.0 and ArcGIS 9.0 Desktop, install both ArcIMS 9.0 Service Pack 3 and ArcGIS 9.0 Desktop Service Pack 3. Since ArcIMS 9.0, ArcSDE 9.0 and the ArcGIS 9.0 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts.

NOTE (ArcGIS Server users): If you have ArcGIS Server 9.0 and any other ArcGIS product installed on your machine, we recommend that you install the ArcGIS 9.0 Server Service Pack before installing the remaining Service Packs. Since ArcGIS Server and the ArcGIS 9.0 products share common DLLs, it is important to keep the software release versions in sync to avoid any software conflicts.

NOTE (ArcView 9.0 Evaluation Edition users): This Service Pack is not supported with the ArcView 9.0 Evaluation Edition. If you try to install it, the installation will fail.

Installation Steps

  • ArcGIS 9.0 must be installed before you can install this Service Pack. If you have not yet applied previous service packs, you do not have to do so before installing Service Pack 3 as it is cumulative and contains all fixes from the pervious service packs. If you already have a previous service pack installed, you may apply Service Pack 3 over it to update the required files.

Please Note: Some areas of the software have not been updated for Service Pack 3, for these areas Service Pack 2 is the most recent update. The following areas were not updated from Service Pack 3: ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit, ArcGIS Server Java ADF, ArcGIS Server .Net ADF, and the ArcGIS Tutorial Data setups as well as the ArcGIS Server JavaADF on UNIX tar file. The Service Pack 2 versions of these updates are available from this page.

To Install:

  1. Make sure you have write access to your ArcGIS installation location, and that no one is accessing it.

  2. Download the appropriate files to a location other than the installation folder:

    ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView)
    ArcGISDesktop90sp3.msp 109 MB
ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit (no updates since SP2)
    ArcGISDesktopDevKit90sp2.msp 38 MB
    ArcGIS Engine Runtime
    ArcGISEngine90sp3.msp 55 MB
    ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit
    ArcGISEngineDevKit90sp3.msp 84 MB
    ArcReader
    ArcGISArcReader90sp3.msp 24 MB
    ArcGIS Server
    ArcGISServer90sp3.msp 91 MB
ArcGIS Server .NET ADF (no updates since SP2)
    ArcGISServerNetADF90sp2.msp 45 MB
ArcGIS Server Java ADF (no updates since SP2)
    ArcGISServerJavaADF90sp2.msp 48 MB
ArcGIS Tutorial Data (no updates since SP2)
    ArcGISTutorial90sp2.msp 2 MB

  3. Double-click the msp files to start the install process.

NOTE: If double clicking on the MSP file does not start the Service Pack installation, you can start the Service Pack installation manually by using the following command:

    1. msiexec.exe /p [location of service pack]\ArcGIS<Product>90sp3.msp REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus

  4. When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.

  5. Repeat steps 2 - 4 for each product installed on your machine.

NOTE: If you have installed client setups from a shared Network Administrative ArcGIS Desktop setup, this Service Pack must be applied to all client installations.

NOTE: You will not be able to install this Service Pack directly from any removable media, you must copy the Service Pack Install file (MSP) locally or to a location on your network prior to installing the Service Pack.

System Administrators note:
A technical paper is available to provide information on deploying ArcGIS and Service Packs. This white paper discusses the deployment of ArcGIS 9.0 setups and Service Packs using Microsoft® Systems Management Server (SMS) and Group Policy, including additional system requirements, suggestions, known issues, and Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) command line parameters. Deployment in a lockdown environment is also covered.

ArcGIS Server JavaADF on UNIX (no updates since SP2)

  1. Make sure you have write access to your ArcGIS Server Java ADF installation location, and that no one is accessing it.

  2. For AIX only, as root, run the slibclean command:

    #slibclean

  3. Download adf90-sp2.tar (56 MB) to your ArcGIS Server Java ADF installation location:

  4. Extract adf90-sp2.tar to get adf90-sp2_extract.tar, adf90-sp2_filelist and adf90-sp2-hp_backup.script files:

    %tar xvf adf90-sp2.tar

  5. Backup your original files. The HP-UX script will create adf90-sp2-hp_bak.tar which contains the Java ADF 9.0 final files the service pack will replace:

    AIX: %tar -cf adf90-sp2_bak.tar -L adf90-sp2_filelist
    HP-UX: %./backup.script
    Linux: %tar cf adf90-sp2_bak.tar -T adf90-sp2_filelist
    Solaris: %tar cf adf90-sp2_bak.tar -I adf90-sp2_filelist

  6. Check that your backup tar was created correctly and can be read:

    %tar -tvf adf90-sp2_bak.tar

  7. Extract the adf90-sp2_extract.tar:

    %tar -xvf adf90-sp2_extract.tar

  8. Run the SetupPostScript

    % ./SetupPostScript
