Acronym for Wide Area Augmentation System. A GPS augmentation system created by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to make GPS reliable enough for commercial aviation in all weather conditions without the need for other navigational equipment. This system provides extra signals from several ground-based facilities and geostationary satellites.
