  1. [network analysis] The arcs or portions of arcs used to define a route.
  2. [cadastral and land records] An area unit of one square mile (640 acres) in the U.S. Public Land Survey System and the equivalent 2.59 square kilometers in Canada's Dominion Land Survey. Sections are bounded by parallels and meridians and are one thirty-sixth of a township. Some sections may actually be less than 640 acres/2.59 square kilometers because of the convergence of meridians.
